A change in behavior

Click on the picture to learn about the effects of concussions and head trauma on Mike Webster. Does some of Ponyboy's behavior make more sense when his recent head injuries are taken into account? Give one specific example of a choice or action of Ponyboy's that you think resulted at least in part from his concussion.

Ponyboy`s concussions werent as bad as a serious concussion. but he did have a lot of headaches and more symptoms but they were not really that bad. His headaches were probably the least painful or the least affected to him because everyone gets headaches even if they don`t have a concussion.

ponyboys concussion was a mild concussion, but it definetely had an effect on his mood, how he did in school, and his thought process. some things that show this is that his voice sounds strange to him, he passed out in the lot after Dally was shot and when he is writing his theme he con only doodle some funny little drawings of horses and the gang, when he used to be a pretty good theme writer. also, when the soc's come to the grocery store, he isnt afraid, he doesnt feel anything, and he pulls a broken glass bottle on them.

I think that it does make sense that Ponyboy seemed kind of out of it and saying stuff like "am I sick?" and " I killed the soc". I think that a choice Ponyboy made because of his concussion was wandering around in the middle of the night after the rumble. If he was right in his brain, he would've been pretty nervous. I know this because he was fairly anxious in chapter one when he was walking home from the movies in broad daylight.

PS I thought that in the movie it was really gross when the neurologist was cutting up Mike Websters brain.

I think that his concussion may have indeed lead to Ponboy wandering around trying to find Johny at night when he already new that Johny was dead, and he was sadly still trying to convince himself that He was alive.

Ponyboy's concusions are not to bad yet. I also thing he is addicted to pain killers and he should get help. The symptom that suggested the most that he had a concussion was the frequent headaches he suffered from. Other than that, I did'nt notice many more symptoms.

I think that taking alot of a drug qould be affect all though pony boy wasnt addicted he took 5 rather than the 2 prescribed. Mike Webster was addicted to painkillers also.

One action of ponyboy's to have a concussion is when he goes to the rumble and gets kicked in the head repeatedly. And yes it makws morw sense when his head injuries are taken into account.

When Ponyboy got his concussion it was a minor cuncussion. But it does help explain why Ponyboy was having trouble with rembering things for example like when he was in the hospital he could not remeber anything from that time. One decision of Ponyboys was when he was wandering around after Johnny died he could have walked home, but he was just amlessly meandering around the nighborhood.

One example of a choice that Ponyboy had was to stay home from the rumble because he had a bad headache. If he had stayed home he would not have been kicked in the head which resulted in even more damage to his brain.

Ponyboy must have had a mild concussion, followed by many other head injuries. One example of his strange behavior is when he wakes up after Dally's death, and cannot recall what has happened the past few days. -Vaughan 5

Most of pony boy’s concussions came from so much that had happened like how both his parents died and how Johnny died and also that Dally had died the concussions were not as severe but he has been through a lot so that is what his concussions are about.

I think that pony boys concussion came from all the things that had happen to like he got kick in the head by a soc and seeing dally die plus taking all those pain killers and his grades started to drop so that is the effects of the concussion.

I think that Ponyboy's concussion definitely had an effect on his behavior. Although it was only a mild one, he was still effected by it. It all started when he was saving the kids in the burning church. He should have been monitored then. But, he wasn't. That was the first mistake. The second mistake was letting him go to the rumble. You can tell that Ponyboy has been effected by the concussion because he gobbles several Aspirins before heading out the door. Finally, after watching Dally get shot and killed, Ponyboy passes out. Finally, his brain can have some rest to settle things down. He is still not feeling good, even after sleeping from Saturday to Tuesday. These events have impacted his brain, and now everyone else realizes it. And it's a good thing, because who knows what else would have happened if he had not given his brain time to rest!

Ponyboy's concussion did have affects and changes in his behavior. He started out having headaches and some other symptons before his concussion got really bad. Ponyboy's behavior caused him to kind of be out of it, like when he kept trying to convince people that Johnny was not dead and that he was the one who killed Bob. He also was walking around at night in the middle of the street with no shoes on. One action that resulted from Ponyboy's concussion was he kept forgetting things like when he didn't believe he was actually at the hospital while suffering a minor concussion after the rumble.

I think that Ponyboy's concussion wasn't very serious but serious enough to make him pass out. Although he did started asking some silly questions when he woke up, like "am I sick?". Obviously if Darry is asleep right by Ponyboy that might mean that he is sick.

When Ponyboy's recent head injuries are taken into consideration, I think his odd behavior makes more sense, especially when he is walking into things at random and when his very good grades in school plummet. One specific example of a choice of Ponyboy's that I think resulted in at least part of his concussion is his decision to take six or seven Advil before the rumble. Although the taking of Advil is supposed to do good when one is in pain, one should be aware of the quantity (the amount) of the pills one is taking, and the frequency (how often) one is taking the pills. Taking too many pills can lead to an over-dosage which, although it may have helped Ponyboy's headache, could cause even worse of an illness-type thing. Taking pills often could also result in this, and Ponyboy took pills often, I presume.
If that is not the precise answer to the question, then I would explain that Ponyboy's decision to participate in the rumble was not one of his best choices because it did greatly ail him, and he was already not in his best shape with his knowledge of Johnny's near death, and after Dally hit him hard on the back.

One example of a choice or action od Ponyboy's concussion that resulted in at least part of his concussion is kwhen he tries and tries to convince himself that he killed Bob and not Johnny. He also tries to convince himself that Johnny isn't dead when he knows he is probably so he won't cry in front of Dally or Darry. His headaches were part of his concussion, but they were probably the least painful part of the concussion or the least affected to Ponyboy. Even though everyone gets headaches one time or another, when you get a concussion, the headaches are probably worse than when you get a normal concussion. But having a concussion doesn't have that mush to do with Ponyboy trying to convince himself that Johnny is dead. And then Dally dies by getting shot by a cop because he had robbed a grocery store and pulled out a gun and pointed it at the cop that shot him. Going through that, especially since the most recent ones were some of his friends, and Ponyboy finally considering Dally an actual friend to him. But Dally purposly robbed a grocery store so that he could get caught and would get shot when he pulled the gun on the cop. Dally wanted to die, especially when Johnny died, because Johnny was the gangs pet. He was never yelled at or hurt by Dally, and Dally didn't hurt Johnny, or even yell at him for sticking up to him for Cherry and Marcia, when he didn't even know Cherry or Marcia.

It does make more sense when some of Ponyboy's head injuries are taken into account because of what he's been through in his life and more recently in his life. Ponyboy had really bad headaches when he had the concussion and when he went to te rumble, Two-Bit said "Glory, look at the kid!", which kinda indicated that Ponyboy was either sick, or had a concussion or some sort of injury.

I think Ponyboy had only a mild concussion, but that still affected his ability to think clearly. He wasn't able to feel or think when his body and mind were trying to warn him something wasn't right. His attention span grew smaller causing him to get lower grades in class. So I defiantly think that the concussion messed him up a bit.

Ponyboy's concussion was not that bad, although he was in the hospital for a few days. I didn't think that he had a concussion untill you brought it up, and now is makes perfect sense. I hope I never get a concussion, but that's not likely :( I hope Ponybay gets better for "court case' because if he is not he may make the judge favor the Socs

Ponyboy had a couple concussions. The first appears to be with the fire. I think that they were more serious, as he went unconscious, which is pretty bad. After the first time he went unconsciuos a few days later he still had a headache. His taking alot of aspirin was something he did all the time. Then he suffered another concussion when he was kicked in the head so hard it stunned him, and he lay limp trying not to black out. The immediate odd behaviors were that he couldn't run afterwards- but stumbled. He was dizzy and didn't really know where he was going or why. The side of his head was bleeding. He passed out and was sleeping for a while.

When he awoke he still had the affects of the concussion. He wasn't well and didn't remember much of what had happened. While he was semi-concious he was saying things that were odd and asking for his parents, who were dead.

The longer term affects of his concussion include that he became absent minded and would do odd things- like walk home without shoes and not notice. He eating habits changed. He was doing poorly in his school work and could no longer do well on his compositions.

When comparing his changes to that of Mike Webster, you can see that he had real concussions with long term affect. Some of the affects didn't show until many years later with Mr. Webster. In the book they talk about them happening shortly there after. Whether this is because Ponyboy's concussions were more severe vs. Mr. Websters being less severe but more plentiful I don't know, but its arguable. I read that the NFL is considering changing the rules to eliminate the 3 point stance to try to reduce concussions.

One example of Ponyboy's actions caused partly by his concussion is wondering in the streets for hours after Johnny's death until a nice guy drove him home. He was also taking a lot of aspirin for what he thought was just a headache. Ponyboy's concussion was mild though and it wasn't serious. But his weird behavior makes sense.

I think Ponyboy should of stayed home and not gone to the rumble, it would of saved him a lot of pain. Also he should of known that the headache was more than just a regular headache.

When Ponyboy's recent head injuries are taken into account, his behavior(like when his grades went down and he kept on bumping into things) does make a lot more sense.
A specific example of a choice Ponyboy made that resulted from the concussion was him taking all the Aspirin pills. Even before he got the concussion he took more than a moderate amount of Aspirins, but to relieve the pain of the concussion he took even more of the pills. Maybe he even had an overdose.

Yes, I think some of Ponyboy's behaviors make more sense when his recent head injuries are taken into account. One specific example of an action of Ponyboy's that I think resulted in part from his concussion was on page 169. Ponyboy narrates, "I started running into things, like the door, and kept tripping over the coffee table and losing things. I always have been kind of absent-minded, but man, then, I was lucky if I got home from school with the right notebook and some shoes on. I walked all the way home in my stocking feet and didn't even notice it until Steve made some bright remark about it.......but I never found them. And, another thing, I quit eating. I used to eat like a horse........everything tasted like baloney. I was lousing up my schoolwork, too."

Ponyboy's concussion was not as bad at first but then when he got kicked in the head during the rumble it got worse. Ponyboy was having a lot of really strong headaches which is one result of a concussion. He was also wandering around aimlessly in front of cars and on the street, finally he just blacked out.

I think Ponyboy got this concussion when he was hit in the head by Dally at the burning church. After Ponyboy got out of the hospital he was just wondering around and finaly he went home with a stranger. After a minor concussion he was in a rumble and got kicked in the head by a soc witch made it worse.

I think Ponyboy did change a little after his concussion. He was a little slow, with his thought process and he got kind of upset when Randy was talking to him which is not how Ponyboy usually acts. I think one result of the concussion was when Ponyboy started screaming at Randy about how he killed Bob.(Which he didn't) Concussions can sometimes change peoples moods and they don't act like theselves.

When you consider the fact that Pony boy had a concussion through all of his actions and bad decisions some of his decisions make more sense. One of these decisions that makes more sense is his decision to go to the rumble even though he was tired and might have had a fever. Another one of these decisions that was based on the concussion was the decision to go with Two-bit instead of staying home with him. Also even though Pony boy does take a lot of aspirin, on one particular night he took more than usual. All these bad decisions that Pony boy made might have been because of the concussion because a concussion is when you have brain damage and it can lead to bad decisions. Pony boy was unconscious for a few days. So when you take into account that Pony boy had a concussion the story line does make more sense. From all these examples you can see that Pony boy's brain was definitely affected by the concussion he suffered.

Ponyboy's concussions were definitely not as serious as all of the players in the NFL. Puse the players on the NFL get concussions a lot more often it is very sad. I had never though about any of this before this past year. Ponyboy might have not had as bad of a concussion but he is very young. He did have some symptoms like could not really think well and all of his headache. He also had many things happening to him like his best friend dying and all of the head injures.

I think Ponyboy's actions do make sense because he has injured his head physically and emotionally several times in the past month/year. When the Socs jumped out of the car and were trying to scare Ponyboy, he didn't feel angry or scared. He just threatened them with a glass bottle with no emotion and had scared them off. I think the concussion was involved in this choice that he made because Ponyboy is not that kind-of person and he is usually nervous when Socs threaten him.
