You have been walking in the woods for hours. You only meant to take a short walk to clear your head, since you've been really stressed out about your portfolio recently. You inadvertently lost track of where you were going, and now it seems as though you've been walking in cricles. You feel as though you've been here before; if you remember correctly, the last time you tried the left fork. You can't really remember for sure, though. Part of you thinks that maybe you went right last time, and maybe you haven't really been here before - maybe your mind is just playing tricks on you. You're ravenous, and on top of that you're so thirsty that your tongue feels like it's made of cotton and covered in sand.
You really need to make it back to your cabin soon. Not only are you hungry and thirsty, but you can see the sun beginning to descend toward the treetops. Before long it will set. The air will cool, nocturnal predators will come looking for you, and you'll have an even harder time finding your way along the path.
Which direction do you head next? Why?
46 comments:
I would head dowm the right path because you thiink that you have already been down the left one and you need to try everything you can because you are very weak from walking without food for a while.
Sarah- Period 3
I'm not really sure which way I would take on the path. Although I could have taken the left path before, I also could have taken the right one. It is a tricky problem, so I would have to go with my gut instinct.I am almost positive that--given by the clues--last time I came to the fork I went left. Because it amounted to nothing, I would want to go to the right. I would want to make sure to mark the fork with an invaluable object, so that, if I went in a circle again, I could figure out a different way to tackle my problem.
I think the path that I would choose would be the Right path, if I thought was already there. If I was going around in circles, I would have already choose, my choice whould of been the Left path. I'm stronger with my left hand, so I always choose right over left. Since I'm confused and I'm not sure if I'm going in circles, I would make something that made it obvious that I was already there. I would hope that I'm NEVER in a situation where I have to randomly choose a path. I would hope that I would have a cell phone with me so I could call my house if I was lost. It also would be great to have a compass.

I would try the right path because that was my first instinct. If I was wrong I could always turn around and come back. If I was that thirsty I would drink out of anytype of water that I could find, even a puddle.
Eden Period 2
PS- Mr. Abts this decision does not show any kind of traits at all! It is like the red door blue door.

If I were in this scenario I would decide to take a right because I have learned from adults and past experiences that your first choice is almost always the correct one. When I take tests and quizzes I sometimes answer a question and talk myself out of it. Pretty much every time I do this the answer is wrong. I also learned from coaches, teachers, and other adults that you should be confident in yourself. If you think you know the solution to a problem, go for it and don't question yourself!
I have been walking for hours in a wood that shall again brighten once the sun pierces the clouds. I feel as though I have been walking in circles, but I also feel as though I have once before come to this fork which I now stand before. If I remember correctly, the left path was the path that led me to this fork. However, since then I wandered, and now I am not entirely sure if I had taken the left path or if it was the right-handed one that I had taken. I am currently leaning more toward the left than the right.
I am becoming nervous--the sun is sinking and I am becoming parched as well as extremely hungry. The atmosphere has cooled considerably downward and I fear that I will either collapse from my lack of energy or freeze.
The path that I choose is the left path. (If this were truly the situation that I was in then I would have the ability to observe and then change paths if I needed to.) Because I continue to be unsure if the left path is the correct path, I investigate my surroundings and take a few steps forward. I recognize an odd, upward-twisting tree branch and a plant similar to a plant I recall putting attention on.
I chose to follow the left path because it was the one which the writer of the blog put the marker on that I should at least think that I recognize it. To choose the path that I mostly recognize would be a first instinct, and because there was not a distinct attention on the right path, the left seems more likely to be chosen. It could be wrong or right, but in real life there could be the possibility of turning back and choosing a second time if that particular path ceased to be familiar to one's eyes or memory.
Kate, Period Two
If I were to choose the path I would chose the right path. I would pick the right path because it said that he already took the left path.
Jennifer Snyder Period 1
Before I chose which direction I would take, I would look at the sunset. I know that the sun sets in the west so next I would picture where my cabin was. Depending on where I remembered the cabins were, I would chose the path that would be going in the direction my cabin is. If I couldn't remember where my cabin was, I would take the path that was going towards the sunset because I know it would lead me to somewhere in the west. Hopefully, I will never get lost in the woods and not remember where my cabin was though.
Elizabeth, period 2
First, I would take something extra I brought with me off, like a headband or sweater, to mark this spot. Then I would start going down the right fork, because I was pretty sure I went down the left one last time. If I see a familiar landmark that I know I saw when I was hiking, I would go back to the split in the road and try the left fork. If I see familiar landmarks there too, I would know that I indeed have been going in circles, and that the left and right forks are probably connected. So, I would turn around and try to retrace my steps keeping an eye out for anything I recognize to let me know whether or not I am on the correct track or not. I think I would probably be able to make some good headway before it gets dark and if I knew I was on the right track then each step would invigorate me because I would know that I was that much closer to society. Also, when it gets dark and I still haven't returned, someone would definitely come looking for me. So as I walked, I would leave some trail behind me to make it easy for people to find me. Another idea would be to stay put and try to build a shelter, but by the way you have written the assignment I assumed you want us to choose a path and take it, not stay and wait.

Mr abts don't post the other one by hans ofer.
I would take the right path because you think you have already been down the left path. You are thirsty and ravenous so why not try your only other option. If you choose left you may end up going the right way because your mind could be playing tricks on you. If you had a compas then you might make it back alot easier. I would also pick the right path because if you evaluate all of the data you have then that wil help you make the right choice.
Max Ofer Period 3
I don't know which one I would choose, personaly I don't think you should just make a choice by left or right, there are other things to go over just as well.Like if you reconize a smell or even if you hear something that sounds familiar. So I don't know which path to go.
grace period 2
If I was in this situation, I would go down the right path because I have already gone down the left one, and it has brought me back to the fork int he road. I haven't tried the right one yet, so I would go down the right one.
I would turn around and retrace my steps. I would do this because maybe if you can remember which way you came from you can find your way out of the woods, and you will be home before dark.
Emma 1
I would take the right path because i probaly did take the left path last time because the first thing you think of is usually right and. Also because your mind could be playing tricks on you saying that you aslready went on the right path. Lastly because the left path sames to curve around and the right path goes stright but that probaly doesn't matter.
Jimmy Period 3
I will go right to check it out if it is the right way I will keep on going, but if its not the right way I will go back and go left. If I go left I will keep on going to try to find a rode and hich hike on from then.
Lyman Townsend
I would choose the right side and hopefully that is the right path if its by a road i would try to get a ride i would mark were I was so i knew i took the wrong way if its wrong i would make a camp with a fire so animals don't come near me and the next day i would go to the left path and that the right path i win
Jack D P2
I would go on the right path because I Thought that I went on the left way. Going on the right side I see a container that contains water so I drink the water and rememder that my home was on the right side a few miles or so. So then I start walking down the road and I see bear so I go down wind and the bare dose not see or smell me so then I keep on going. A hafe a mille latter I see a opinig in the treese so I run to it. when I get there I see my house and then I run for it.
Andrew L. Period 5
I would of taken the right path because it looks shorter amd the left path looks like it meets up with the right path.
will period 1
I think that I would take the right path for about a few hundred yards and if it led to almost nowhere and still in the forest I would go back and take the left path. Since I can doubt myself a lot, I would probably just go with what my instict told me and take that one wild shot.
Period 2
I would try the right path because if I just remembered a little bit that I went down the left path before I would probably by right because usually if you are stuck in a situation like that you would tend to go with your first instinct and if I remembered just a little I would go with that choice first before anything.
Lucas Busse period 2
I would Probably pick the right path because if I was pretty sure that you have already been down the left path and you did not find anything I think it would be worth it to try the right one. I would choose the right one because if I really wanted to go home and I was sure that already went on the left one I would try to choose the one that I think would be faster and I think that the right one is going to be faster.
Grant 5
I would go back the way I came. I would do this because the picture shows that your on a road, so it will lead somewhere. Also if that doesn't work I would just yell until somebody heard me. ALSO if that doesn't work either, I shouldn't have gone for a walk. (:Alexandra Williams:) per:5
I would take the right path, because you thinks that you have already been down the let, and if you look carefully at the grass on both paths and compare them, the right seems to have been worn more than the left.
Robert 5
oh, and here are some tips for when you get lost in the woods.
1. go downhill! you will eventually reach a stream, that will folw to the ocean. By then you should have found civilization.
2. drink running water. it is cleaner.
3. make marks at every intersection, so you can make sure you dont go in circles.
4. retrace your steps.
Robert 5
I would go on the left path. I would do this becasue people always tell me that the frist choice is usually the right choice. I also am left handed and I usually pick paths that are left. Another thing I would do is walk a little down the left path but make a trail like drag your foot in the dirt. If I did not regonize anything I would go back down the right path and make the same trail but not go all the way down. Then if I was positive it was the right one I would continue on my way. If I was sure it was my left I would follow my trail and go left. If I still was not sure I would flip a coin. I would do this because both paths lead to civilization so if you chose the wrong path you will eventually get to a house and you can call for help. You might have been lucky and randomly picked the right choice.
Bella period 5
If I had to choose I would first look at the sun. I would probably remember how the sun felt on me or how it looked. I would also go all throughout my day and try to mentally re-trace my steps.
Last night I lost my agenda and I thought over what I did all day. I orginally thought I left it at the Drs. office, as I had an appointment in the middle of the day. It was too late to call, so I thought about where I saw it last. I remembered that I dropped it in science. The times I have lost my agenda it has always been because I leave it in science. It's the way I put my books down there. In the morning I went to Mrs.Parr's room and it was there.
So, I would start by trying to retrace my steps all day, and thinking of everything I saw, felt and smelled. I would try to think about my habits= if I have a choice, do I normally go left or right? (Politically I go right, but :-) I would also try to remember if I came upon this place exactly as I had now- reaching a fork or did I get here from one of the forks and got to the merged path? This would change how I might look at it. I would also look if there were any footprints and if I found human foot prints I would look at my shoe to see if it fits. I would also look for car tracks to see if any people had driven down the path in a while. I don't know from the information whether my camp was a place where people would go to often, or that only I go to, nevertheless, once I knew this information would let me know which path was more likely. I would also look for simple things to help me decide if I had been there already. I would try to remember what the terrain was going down.
The left side has more trees on the side that are closer to the path than the right. The left seems to curve quicker. On the left there are small pines close to the path.
Though it looks like both paths in the picture come together.
I would ask myself if the forks were what I thought was closer to my camp, or further- because if they were further I would just turn around and retrace my steps back. I wouldn't walk until I made a decision- even though thinking takes time, so does going the wrong way. If I still couldn't figure it out, I would go with my gut as to what was right. However, I would leave a piece of clothing at the top of the fork I chose so next time there would be no question. If I was stumped I would try to find some plants that might be edible along the way so that if I had to I could eat them. I would also try to pick up things for a shelter, and think about where to start to build a place to temporarily hide. If it was super hot I would then dig a hole to stay in. Because under ground it is colder. If it was cold I would gather leaves and any other material to cover myself with to insulate myself with.
So I would think, and try to not repeat my mistakes.
Jaocb R Period 2
I would choose the right fork because it says that if you remembered correctly the last time you tried the left fork. I would chose the right fork because I would go for what I remembered the first time I thought about which fork to chose. The first thought is probably, sometimes the best thought because it is the most refreshing. If I took the wrong path I could quickly run back and try the left. Katie F. Per.5
aI would have choseing the right path because in the story you said you were pretty sure that you already went down the left and you also said that you are hungry and thristy and by this point i would chose the one that i didnt think i went down and also it looks like the right path is a straight shot for the cabin.
Tom Period 1
Well I would chose the path to the right because the first thing that I remembered was going down the left trail. I always go with my first gut reaction. And I have experienced if you second guess yourself something always goes wrong. (EX: test answers)
Jordian period 1
I think that you should turn around and head back down the path that you came from. I think that this would lead you to your cabin before the sun descnds behind the trees.

I will not go left or right, instead I will take out my compass and look for the direction to go back home. My home is towards the north so I will use my compass to find north. This is because in this situation I am just too tired to concentrate enough to get through any danger that could happen along the way. Therefore, heading home is the smart choice for me so I can rest and clear my mind after a long walk. My walk was meant to relieve my stress from the portfolio but now I just think it gave me more stress. Instead of this walk I will relieve my stress with some hot chocolate when I get home. But first I must find my way home. Good thing I brought a compass!!
Patrick PD 3
If I were in this situation, I would take the left path because according to the photo the right looks like it might circle back around. Also, in the picture the left fork looks like it won't veer off and thus has a higher chance of getting you back to your cabin safely. Because the choices are like the red door blue door scenario, I had to analyze the scenario (photo) for other hints to help.

I would choose the right fork. Even though I wasn't sure which way I went, I thought I might have gone to the left. I would go with my first instincts and not over think it. I would go right since my gut tells me that I haven't been there before. I would then look for something to drink and things that look familiar that are near my cabin. If I don't see anything, I would go back the way I came and take the left fork.
I would go with the oppisite of what I thought first because for some reason this always works for me. If I started walking and realized or rememberd that its not the right way. I would start running and head back and go the other way and hope its the rightm
Krista Period 1
I would go left because if you think that possibly you went one way you should try all your opptuions. Plus you can always turn back as long as the wild mosters don't eat you alive first!!!
Helen-5
By now you are tired and maybe experiencing dillusions and getting dizzy, and you all ready know that you are hungry and thirsty. There maybe animals to hunt you if you are out to late. Since you thought that you have taken the left path, I would choose the right path. While looking down it I would look for distinctive clues to my memory. I would also every so often look to the left to see if I remember part of that, or maybe than later climb up a tree because your time is running out. If failure is the result to the choice chosen then I would start looking for a clear water are like a stream or spring. In my opinion chosing the most obvious path is the only thing left to do. It doesnt matter if you have a compass or an expert navigational system, when your thirsty and tired you dont think straight. Take the path on the right.
Ian P2
not able to right a post because I was at a place with no computers.
I would choose the right side because in the post it says that you are almost sure that you went left, which just led you to go in circles. So I think if you went right, then you might make it home then making the same mistake again and going in a big circle.
Aisling5
I would head down the path that I'd already been down because I would have known what that path brought, and what challenges were down that path. If I had gone down the other path, I might have gotten hurt, because I wouldn't have known what challenges the path brought, and what the path was like.

I'd go down the right path because it's more travled than the left path. The left path looks like it takes a right turn a ways back.

I would go left because its good to alwys go with your first answer. Every path leads somwhere is what I go by.

If I had the choice of going right or left, I would probably have to take the right path, since it was what I was thinking of before. Usually I can get lost in forests easily, so it would probably come down to me choosing a random path.
KaraP3
Well first you have to admit to yourself that your lost. 2nd, as for me being a hunter i would look at the trees and if there is moss on the left side of the tree you would be heading north. I wold have also taken the Right trail because you have already thought you have been down the left one. As for going around in circles stay in one spot and try to figure out were you are.
Alyssa

If there was another choice to turn around and retrace my steps I would do that. But I would go to the right for my choice but I would go fast like walk fast to save my energy in case I chose the wrong path. If I did choose the wrong path I would just know to take the left one or before I left for the right path I would mark a spot on a tree to show that I have been there before.
Rachel Period 1
I would head down the right path because in the story it says "if you remember correctly, the last time you tried the left fork." So if you went on the left path last time you should try the right path this time to exaust all options.

I would close my eyes hold out my pointer finger and spin. i would spin untill i felt sick then stop on the spot. if my finger pointed down the left lane then i would thake the left, if it pointed down the right i would take the right. i would suck it up and hope that i choose the rigth path.

i would have went the path that looked the most intresting and exciting to take my min off of being hungry and wanting something to drink. so there for i would have went down the right path.
