Cherry and Marcia step outside of normal Soc behavior by talking in a friendly manner with some greasers. After chatting for a while, it is obvious that Cherry and Ponyboy get along well and have some important similarities. Why is it that she explains to Pony that she probably won't talk to him if they cross paths in school? What does it reveal about Cherry's character that she doesn't want to even be seen talking to him by other Socs?

But I think pony took it the wrong way. I think she means as in I don’t want you to get hurt, but I like talking with you. I think if one of the Socs saw them together they would tell cherry boyfriend, bob and then pony would either be beaten or worse. Cherry’s character is supposed to be this smart lovely girl who belongs with the Socs. She must have a dark side to be talking to the greasers. Cherry explain to Ponyboy that they are not from the same world and that they are very different. The Socs have nice cars, cloths, and money and take pride in doing well in school while the greasers have one outfit, two if they’re lucky, they don’t have a lot of money and normally receive very bad grades in school. Although cherry is very nice to Ponyboy at the drive in she tells him that she probably won’t stop and talk to him if they cross paths in school. This proves that cherry has a very shallow personality and can only see different classes as what they are as a group, not what they are as individuals.

Cherry’s character is based on how she was probably raised. While at the drive-in theater she felt safe talking with Ponyboy as no Socs were around and was truly engaged in conversation and enjoyed her time with him. At least she was honest with him and told him the truth. It probably isn’t the way she truly wants to feel but it is something that has been taught to her over the years and has been ingrained into her personality. Unfortunately, it’s hard to break old habits. How people were raised during those times and the environment in which we they grew up in molded the content of their character.
Sometimes as we grow into adults we can see things from a more mature perspective. We grow larger wings and learn to truly fly on our own. We look at things through a different viewing glass and sometimes we change how we feel. Most often though our values don't change and we believe and follow what we were taught as children. So while Cherry’s character content was not upstanding, for a short period of time she treated Ponyboy with pleasant interest. It’s hard to blame her because she is only behaving in the way she only knows how to behave.

During The Outsiders, Cherry made it very clear that she could be kind to the Greasers, and when alone or with one of her good friends Marcia. However, when she says she probably won't say hello to Ponyboy in the hallway if she sees him it shows a different story. This shows a little something about her character. It tells us even though she is capable of being nice to the greasers when the other Soc's arent around, it doesnt mean she can be like that when they are. She shows that even though she had a lot in common with Ponyboy, and admits that she just might be able to fall in love with Dally if she spent too much time with him, they still can't be friends, or even talk to each other, as if she is embarressed. She proves that she too follows the rules of Socs' and Greasers'.
